Teacher, trainer and coursebook writer, Ben Goldstein, talks about his Image Conference experience in Lisbon.

  1. What did you enjoy about The Image Conference?

The variety of presentations – from talks covering academic research to hands-on workshops.

  1. How was The Image Conference different from other conferences you’ve been to?

There were speakers from many different fields, not just the ELT world. This enabled us to get different perspectives on how visual literacy impacts in various teaching and learning contexts.

  1. Sum up your talk briefly.

My talk focused on how visual material can help us to cultivate global competence in the classroom.

  1. What were the main discussion points to arise in The Image Conference?

The issues of identity, empathy, values, intercultural awareness and critical thinking cropped up throughout the conference and were of great interest. I also found the exploitation of largely undiscovered online materials for language teaching (e.g. websites of art galleries) to be very useful and practical.
